Read the post below for a good discussion about writing effective remote job descriptions.

Most hiring processes start by creating a job description you hope will catch candidates’ attention. Often a job post is a candidate’s first interaction with a company and many decide whether or not to apply to a role based purely on the ad. With so much riding on how you describe a position, getting it wrong can mean a longer time to hire and cost you potentially strong candidates. Our newly remote world isn’t helping matters either. Without conferences or networking opportunities to source talent in-person, what you say in your job posts matters more then ever. So what can you do to update your job descriptions for a virtual world? Read the rest of this entry »

Placement Activity Hot Globally

by Veronica Blatt

Placement activity is hot globally among NPAworldwide members this year. With an extreme talent shortage, candidates are in charge. Salaries are increasing rapidly, with salaries above US $100K per year up roughly one-third compared to last year. Not only that, this salary level is now the leading sector for split placements this year. The largest fee shared so far this year is a whopping US $125K, which is at least partly due to a very high salary. Read the rest of this entry »

A few touches to your mobile phone and your groceries, an Uber or a pizza come to you. So why not a job? Many of the best jobs are never advertised, so how do you hear about them?

Good employers know that the best lawyers are so busy running their practices that they don’t have time to trawl through job ads. They also like keeping strategic hires out of the public eye so the marketplace doesn’t catch on to what they’re doing and where they’re headed. Read the rest of this entry »

Develop Relationships Before You Need Help

by Liz Carey

As a member engagement specialist at NPAworldwide, part of my job is to help members find success in the network. We always advise members that in order to build relationships in the network, it’s important to be visible by posting records, attending calls/meetings, and reaching out.

But sometimes, we have members who only reach out when they say: “I have a critical search and need help!”

We are always here to help, but I cannot help but wonder –“Who have you reached out to? Who do you network with?” If you don’t have relationships with your network partners, you may not get the help you need.

The best advice we can give members is to develop network partners long before you need them. As businessman/author Harvey Mackay says about networking, “Dig your well before you’re thirsty.” Read the rest of this entry »

What Does a Recruiter Do?

by Veronica Blatt

If you’re a job seeker who has tried unsuccessfully to work with a headhunter, you may find yourself wondering, “What does a recruiter do?” In the simplest terms, I often say that recruiters help companies find employees, they don’t help people find jobs. You may be thinking that’s the same thing, but it’s an important distinction to make because the employer (company) is paying for the recruiter’s services. And ultimately, that means the recruiter is working for the employer. Certainly during the process the recruiter is also talking with various candidates, and if the recruiter is successful, one of those candidates will be hired. But most recruiters, most of the time, are working to fill a specific opening and are only dealing with candidates who are highly qualified for that opening. Read the rest of this entry »

6 Clues to Identify a Back Door Hire

by Veronica Blatt

Today’s guest blogger is Wilson Cole. He is the CEO of BackdoorHires.com and Adams, Evens & Ross, the nation’s largest credit and collections agency designed exclusively for the staffing and recruiting industry. In 2008 he was inducted into INC Magazine’s, “INC 500” for being the CEO of Adams, Evens & Ross, the 307th fastest-growing privately held company in America. Adams, Evens, & Ross has helped more than 3,000 staffing and recruiting firms recover more than $1 billion in past-due debt and is an NPAworldwide Endorsed Program.

The first clue can be observed in what the candidate says. When prompted to take an assignment at a company, if they respond that they previously tried to get hired there in the past but never heard back or that they receive recruiting emails from the company but never respond, those are telltale clues that a back door hire could be on the horizon.
