3 Tips for Independent Recruiters to Resist Lowering Their Fees

by Veronica Blatt

It turns out that recruiters like to talk about money. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Last week, we had a dynamic discussion on the Independent Recruiter Blog about whether independent recruiters should refund their fees. Today, I’m going to follow up with some tips about how to resist the pressure to reduce recruiting fees.

One of my favorite sessions from the 2011 Big Biller Summit was Gary Stauble’s presentation about how to increase recruiter profits. One way to maintain or increase your profit margin is to protect your recruiting fees. Here are some pointers to help you avoid lowering your fees: Read the rest of this entry »

Because there are 15 tips, I am going to break them up into three separate posts with 5 tips each. Read the rest of this entry »

International Recruiters Take Note: Salaries are Increasing!

by Veronica Blatt

Yesterday, one of our members called me looking for some information on candidate salaries. His question turned into an interesting research project for me, so I’m sharing what I have learned.

For years, our independent recruiter network earned the majority of its income from placements in the $60K – $80K range. These were skilled, middle-management positions, and they were the staple of NPA’s split placement activity. Salaries have been shifting, and we’ve noticed a gradual uptick in placements above $100K. Independent recruiting firms, like so many other small businesses, often struggle to increase their business in scope, size, or revenue. For professional recruiters, knowledge is often limited to a specific industry or occupation. It’s difficult to find the time or resources required to learning a new market, and it’s expensive to hire more staff. So what can independent recruiters do to grow their business?

Recruiting Resources for Candidate Relocation

by Veronica Blatt

house-suburbsYesterday, NPA hosted a free webinar by Laurie Johnson from Recruiter Relocation about Recruiting and Candidate Relocation. Recruiter Relocation is a service NPA endorses. Their service is free to recruiters.

6 Ways Job Boards are like Online Dating

by Veronica Blatt

Today I’m going to share my thoughts on how job boards are similar to online dating. After all, “everyone” says that job boards will be the end of the recruiting industry, and “everyone” also says that you have to look online to find your ideal date. All these experts must be on to something, right? From my limited experience with both job boards and Internet dating sites, I’m here to state emphatically that job boards aren’t going to put recruiters out of business anytime soon. (Disclosure: NPA recently launched a job board.) Read the rest of this entry »

Recruiting Networks and Personal Relationships

by Veronica Blatt

Recruiting networks can be formal or informal. There are many different business models that are successful. Some recruiters are drawn to a transactional model, where the focus is on the placement, not necessarily on a long-term partnership. Other networks, like NPA, are relationship-based. While our members are certainly focused on making placements, they are vested in NPA as member-owners of our cooperative structure. They spend time cultivating relationships. Recruiting Franchise vs. Recruiting Network – Which one is right for you?

by Veronica Blatt

When hiring is robust, like the cycle we are entering (or are already in, depending on the market), there is high interest in starting a recruiting business. It can be a lucrative and rewarding career; it’s attractive to many former HR and corporate recruiters, and high-producing third-party recruiters who have no equity in their current employment situation may consider going out on their own.
