Technology Can Accelerate Hiring. Relationships Still Drive Decisions

by Veronica Blatt

Today’s guest blogger is Parvathy Krishnan of Cucumber Consultants in Hyderabad, India. Cucumber Consultants has core expertise in executive recruitment, with a focus on placing C-suite executives such as CFOs and other senior leadership roles across diverse industries. Parvathy is currently serving on the NPAworldwide Board of Directors. After more than 25 years across borders and cultures, Parvathy has learned that successful hiring depends far less on qualifications and far more on truly understanding people, their motivations, cultural fit, and values.

Beyond Qualifications

Technology has changed recruitment in ways many of us could not have imagined a few years ago. Looking back on more than 25 years in this profession, I realise that one of the constants has been the need to keep learning, adapting, and reinventing ourselves. Perhaps nowhere has that been more evident than over the past two years.

Today, sourcing, screening, scheduling & market mapping can all be done faster and more efficiently than ever before. That is a positive & useful development . When technology can take care of repetitive tasks, recruiters can spend more time doing the work that truly adds value.

Yet one of the things I have learned over the years, particularly through working with fellow recruiters, employers & candidates across different countries and cultures, is that successful hiring is rarely about qualifications & fitment based on JD alone.

A résumé tells us where someone has worked. A profile highlights experience and achievements. These are important pieces of the puzzle, but they do not tell the whole story.

What motivates a person to consider a move? What type of leadership brings out their best? How do they prefer to communicate? What expectations do they carry from their culture, experiences & working environment?

Very often, the answers to these questions have a greater bearing on success than the résumé itself.

A Lesson from a Cross-Border Search

A situation that has stayed with me involved a cross-border search where the candidate appeared, on paper, to be an excellent fit. The experience aligned with the role. Compensation expectations were reasonable. Both sides were enthusiastic about moving forward.

As conversations progressed, however, it became clear that there was something more important beneath the surface. The candidate was looking for a highly collaborative environment where ideas could be openly discussed and challenged. The hiring organisation, while successful and respected, operated within a more traditional and hierarchical structure.

Nothing in the résumé suggested a concern. The initial interviews went well. On paper, it looked like a strong match.

Yet the deeper conversations told a different story. The more we discussed, the more apparent it became that both our client & candidate were likely to be disappointed once the initial excitement of a new hire wore off.

The candidate was ultimately withdrawn from the process.

It was not the easiest decision. The placement would have generated a significant fee. However, moving forward would not have served the long-term interests of either the client or the candidate.

When No Hire Is the Right Outcome

In the end, no hire was made. From a purely transactional perspective, some might view that as an unsuccessful outcome. I see it differently.

Both parties were able to move forward with greater clarity. More importantly, they avoided investing time, energy & commitment in a situation that was unlikely to succeed.

The trust that resulted from that decision proved far more valuable than any placement fee. That experience reinforced something I always believed in strongly: recruitment is not simply about bringing people together. It is about helping people make good decisions.

Sometimes success is measured by a placement. And, sometimes success is measured by the placement that did not happen.

Looking Ahead

Technology will undoubtedly continue to improve how we work & it should. At the same time, we may want to introspect further on where the greatest value in recruitment truly lies.

While technology can help us work faster and more efficiently, understanding people remains at the heart of successful hiring. Their motivations. Their aspirations. Their concerns. Their cultural realities.

Those insights rarely come from a database, a profile or an automated process.

They emerge through conversations, trust & relationships.

Technology can accelerate hiring. Relationships still drive decisions.
