Writing Engaging Job Postings

by Veronica Blatt

image of laptop screen displaying job postingsRecruiters today are tasked with an increasingly difficult job: writing engaging job postings that attract the right candidates for their positions. With fierce competition for attention in the employment market, it’s essential for recruiters to craft compelling job postings that stand out from the rest. Here are some tips to help you create postings that will draw in the best talent and make your recruiting process more successful.

The most important goal of any job posting is to accurately convey the position you’re trying to fill. That means giving enough information about the role and its responsibilities so potential applicants can understand what they would be doing if they decide to apply and ultimately get hired. Be sure to include a clear job title, salary range, required experience, and qualifications. Don’t be afraid to get creative – try using language that emphasizes how this position could benefit someone professionally in terms of career growth or other advantages.

Job Descriptions Aren’t Job Postings

Job descriptions are internal documents used to explain in detail all of the tasks associated with a particular role. They are helpful to have for performance reviews and other evaluations. Some fulfill a legal requirement. Job postings are a marketing document intended to sell a candidate on the opportunity. Don’t use the client’s job description as your job posting. You won’t attract the candidates you’re looking for.

When writing a posting, be mindful of your audience and how they might perceive what you’re saying. People want to feel valued as potential employees, so consider highlighting unique benefits like flexible scheduling or other perks. Use language that speaks directly to a reader’s interests by emphasizing the aspects of the job that make them feel important and appreciated, such as an emphasis on creativity or working on cutting-edge projects.

Think Mobile

It’s also important to keep your content concise and organized. Most job seekers will be using a mobile device for at least a portion of their search, so avoid long blocks of text; instead, stick with short paragraphs broken up by bullets for easy skimming. Make sure all information needed is included without being too wordy – people are more likely to read through posts if they don’t need to sift through lines of text looking for what they need! This is especially true for small screens.

Focus on the Sizzle

Beyond outlining practical details about the job itself, post something inspiring about why someone should apply. This can take many forms – speaking honestly about why this position matters or expressing your excitement as an employer can both go a long way towards making your postings memorable and appealing compared to others out there in the market. Include tangible goals you hope new hires will achieve with enough detail so potential applicants can imagine themselves contributing meaningfully at work every day. This will show them why working at your organization might be especially meaningful or rewarding for their career trajectory.

Finally, make sure you highlight any special requirements needed for consideration during the application process (background checks, visas, etc.). You don’t want an applicant surprised midway through their recruiting journey because they didn’t know they weren’t eligible due to visa restrictions!

Ultimately, creating engaging job postings involves more than simply writing down facts about a position; it requires taking into account who exactly is being targeted and crafting language around those individuals’ values, needs and interests in order to draw them into applying for a role at your organization.
