On February 2nd, according to American folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow, then the spring season will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and winter weather will persist for six more weeks. A Hollywood movie was based on this folklore- Groundhog Day. It reminded us that we really do only have one chance in life to do the right thing and make the right decisions. In the movie, Bill Murray would wake up and repeat the same day over and over. He realized he had a fresh start every day to correct wrong decisions by simply going to sleep and waking up the next day.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a do-over after making certain decisions? Have you ever made the wrong decision with a candidate? Did you go in the wrong direction on a search and waste time? Unfortunately our lives and careers are not a Hollywood movie- but what if they were? What would you wake up and do differently tomorrow? Maybe you’re trying to learn something, and you wish you had more time to master it. Take the time to learn! Are you responding to the same issues the same way you always have? Call on a colleague and ask their opinion on how to handle it. The goal is to improve every day and respond to life’s challenges with an open mind and willingness to grow.
Lou Holtz said “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” Embrace the challenges and move forward as a better recruiter!
