Optimizing a Website for Voice Search

More web surfers than ever are choosing mobile search, making voice search more important than ever. Here’s why recruiters need it, and how to get started.

Keyword(s): voice searching

20% of mobile searches are now driven by voice search. If the trends stay in line and innovation progresses accordingly it’s estimated over half of all searches will use voice searching by 2020.

Optimizing for voice search is an increasingly essential tool in your SEO belt. But what makes voice search different and how can you get started optimizing your website?

We’ve got you covered.

Why Do You Need to Optimize for Voice Searching?

Why aren’t your current SEO efforts enough? The crux of it is, people will search differently depending on the method used.

For instance, if someone’s using a laptop to find nearby Indian restaurants, they might type “Indian restaurants” into the search bar. If they’re using voice search, they’re more likely to say something more conversational. Something like, “Find the best Indian within 5 miles”.

People using mobile on the go will also interact with your website differently to those behind laptops.

Optimizing your recruitment website for voice search is essential. It ensures you’re capturing the widest possible cross-section of potential clients.

How Do You Do It?

Voice search optimization is similar to a lot of other tried-and-true SEO practices but where it differs, it differs significantly. It’s important you take these few unique characteristics into account.

A Focus on Long-tail Keywords

Keyword research is still relevant when optimizing for voice search but long-tail keywords are the stars. This is because people are more conversational and ask more questions when using voice search.

When someone asks, “Where can I find pasta near me?” voice recognition will start the query at “where”. From there it identifies the subject (“pasta”) and uses the phrase “near me” to determine where a pasta restaurant is relative to the smartphone’s GPS.

Voice searches are often more detailed than typical typed search phrases. This is what makes targeting long-tail keywords a great way to capture voice searches.

Update Your Google My Business Listing

A lot of voice searching is done on-the-go. Things like asking directions, enquiring about parking, and looking up contact details are among the top voice searches across all demographics.

All this information should be found on your Google My Business listing. Keeping that listing up to date and relevant is the best way for Google to get your business’ information into the hands of people asking for it. And a lot of those people are searching using voice search.

Questions Are King

This point goes hand in hand with your long-tail keywords. People are more likely to ask questions when using voice search.

Tailoring your website’s content to ensure you’re clearly answering the questions asked will go a long way to capturing those queries.

Voice Search is the Future

As mobile use continues to climb, voice searching is only going to follow. By ensuring your site is voice search optimized you’ll be giving your recruitment business the right tools to step into the future with your best foot forward.
