NPAworldwide’s Business Barometer Survey Reveals Optimism Despite Global Talent Slowdowns

by Veronica Blatt

NPAworldwide, the leading global recruitment network, has released the findings of its latest Business Barometer Survey. The survey, conducted in August 2023, gathers insights from independent recruitment firm owners within the NPAworldwide network. These members specialize in executive, professional, and contract positions on a global scale.

In recent months, there has been a slowdown in the global demand for talent. While fewer job openings are available, recruiters with expertise and connections still have ample opportunities to thrive. According to NPAworldwide president Dave Nerz, 59% of respondents reported similar or improved business outcomes compared to the previous 180-day period. Read the rest of this entry »

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA – August 26, 2022 – According to the latest Business Barometer Survey from NPAworldwide, the global recruitment network, demand for talent has strengthened significantly over the last six months. Sixty percent of respondents reported results that were better by at least five percent over the prior 180-day period. This positive growth is expected to continue in the near future. Thanks to this healthy business environment, independent recruitment firms are seeing significant increases in revenue and profitability.

“Demand for talent has strengthened over the last 6 months! Sixty percent of respondents indicated results better by more than 5% over the prior 180 period,” said Dave Nerz, president of NPAworldwide. “While the last half of 2021 was quite positive, and up from prior year results, the continued growth has been impressive for the first half of 2022. More than 40% of reporting recruitment businesses indicated growth of 15% or more over a strong close in 2021. Responses, which arrived in line with talks of global recession and continued market volatility, also show an optimistic view for the next 6 month period. Businesses are still searching for talent.”

Chart of Business Barometer Conditions Over the Past 180 Days

Other results of the Business Barometer Survey of the 550-plus independent members of NPAworldwide indicated:

  • 44% of survey respondents are from outside of North America.
  • The largest respondent group was from North America at 60% followed by Australia/New Zealand at 18%.
  • The remaining respondents were from Asia, EMEA or LatAm.
  • At the time of the survey, 88.2% of the respondents see the next 6 months as positive or the same as the last 6 months.
  • 36.6% of those taking the survey have seen fees increase in the last 6 months.

“The strongest sectors continue to be technology, manufacturing/supply chain, and accounting/finance. Our independent member firms working these sectors are experiencing strong demand for talent,” said Nerz. “Signals from the economy and from markets are not as positive as the results being experienced by our member firms. While the complexity of hiring is smoothing post-lockdowns and limits driven by the impact of the pandemic, there is still much to learn about hiring and retaining in today’s employment market. Candidates continue to receive multiple offers and counter offers from existing employers. Speed and aggressive compensation planning are required to attract and retain top talent.”  NPAworldwide members typically work executive/professional full-time positions on a global basis.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA – August 29, 2017 – NPAworldwide, a global recruitment network, announced the results of its twice annual business barometer survey. This is a survey completed by the independent recruitment firm owners that are members of the NPAworldwide global network. Members are asked to document business results and predict future results that are representative of the independent recruitment industry.

“Member recruiters are very positive about business conditions over the last 180 days and see a continuation of positive momentum for the future,” said Dave Nerz, president of NPAworldwide. “More than 90% of the independent business owners surveyed are forecasting similar or improved market conditions in the next 180 days.”

Other results of business barometer survey of the 500 independent members of NPAworldwide indicated:

  • Thirty-seven percent of survey respondents are from outside of North America.
  • North America represented 63% of respondents, with the next largest respondent group from Australia/New Zealand at 16 percent of the total.
  • The remaining 21% of respondents were from Asia, EMEA or LatAm.
  • Just under 20% of respondents exclusively work the client side of recruiting and allow their business partners to source candidates for their client’s openings.
  • Forty-seven percent reported business as improved in the last 180 days.
  • Seventy-five percent reported business performance in line with or above expectations in the last 90 days…up 12 percentage point since February.
  • As for the next 6 months, a full 72% of the respondents have a positive outlook for results.
  • 23% of those taking the survey have seen fees increase in the last 6 months.

“Member recruitment firms view manufacturing / operations / engineering as a strong vertical market segment producing results for recruiters. Accounting / finance is also quite a hot vertical and human resources had several mentions for the first time in recent memory. Results of the business barometer survey point to increasingly positive results for independent firms working these active and positive segments,” said Nerz.

He continued, “Candidates and sourcing of passive talent versus scraping names from LinkedIn is the challenge for truly strong recruitment firms. The healthy nature of the recruitment industry has created many new firms, services and competitors for independents. The market is fully candidate-driven now. Client assignments are taking longer to fill and perfect-fit talent is difficult to locate. Most member firms and the clients they serve have multiple jobs open. The NPAworldwide split-fee model is a perfect complement to most members’ businesses and supports a speedier fill of employer’s most difficult searches.”

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA – April 5, 2017 – NPAworldwide, a global recruitment network, has announced its twice-annual Business Barometer Survey results. The survey engages the boutique and independent recruiters that are members of the NPAworldwide global network in documenting past results and predicting future recruitment industry results.

“Member recruiters are very positive about business conditions over the last 180 days and see a continuation of positive momentum for the future,” said Dave Nerz, president of NPAworldwide. “More than 90% of the independent business owners surveyed are forecasting similar or improved market conditions in the next 180 days.”

Other results of this survey of the 500 independent members of NPAworldwide indicated:

  • 65 percent of survey respondents are from North America.
  • The second largest respondent group was from Australia/New Zealand at 21 percent of the total.
  • 18% of respondents were in Asia, EMEA or Latin America.
  • 47% reported business as improved in the last 180 days.
  • 25% reported business as staying the same in the last 6 months.
  • 28% saw a decline in business over the last 180 days.
  • 63 percent reported business performance in line with or above expectations in the last 90 days.

“Member recruitment firms view manufacturing/supply chain, technology and then accounting/finance as the hottest vertical markets at this time.
